Content syndication is indeed huge! It's one of those SEO tactics that I have yet to dominate, but perhaps with the use of your blog I can see what I can do with it.

That's for this incredible amount of information.

Do you know I'm still amazed at the way some people treat the internet!

If you were at a meeting would you spout some rubbish and expect to get respect, a sensisble response and/or start a long term relationship? Of course not.

But for some reason people think it's acceptable to do just that on the internet and then wonder why they don't get results!

Very good explanation of syndication here but also a great pointer on the way to "behave" on the net - if you want to get results that is :)

The article mentions several times that for the syndication system to work for you, your content must be excellent. (E.g, last sentence of paragraph 3: "If your content is really good, syndication can set off a viral spread through social channels.") If your content doesn't inspire people, you are certainly wasting your time.

You make some good points - but I think you miss the point of the syndication system. The purpose is not to take over the social popularity and force your post to the top, but rather to get enough activity so it can at least be seen by the masses - and if the people like it it will get lots of social activity take off. If they don't like the CSN lets it die off. So it is more like a catalyst that helps the content you post react with the people - but only if the content is the right type to create a reaction.

Would you touch on how I can learn more about the skills of locating the Power Users within the niche of your network and then back engineering what they have done?
There's also the aspect of going out on the internet and finding good content that hasn't been submitted yet. Even for a newbie these concepts are easy to understand and appreciate, but how and where can I lget some skills training and support to begin building this, so I'm not banging my head against the wall for many months only to give up in confusion and frustration. Practcally speaking, I want to learn the actual mechanics of performing the necessary tasks to build a successful content syndication machine and implement this very duplicatable and powerful skill. I love the concept of the Synnd community, but want to first establish the strong foundation of the content syndication revelation.

A great job of reverse engineering - and like it or not content syndication is prevalent across the internet not just the social bookmarking sites.

Just off to see how far down your syndication network I have to go before I can break in ;)

Big thank you for a really useful post - also some of the comments. You've really cleared some of the veils away for me about how the 'system' works, with the digg examples. I nearly didn't read this post as it was long and I'm in a hurry, but I'm very glad I did

Kareena's point is more valuable to me than the MrBabyMan example. These long tail niches are getting longer according to recent articles. Which is perfect for content creators. Digg might not be a network I would want to be part of. But there are probably thousands of social networks now - so many that no one has any accurate count. Certainly Ning would help you create any particular network you wanted.

Take book publishing - I found a group on Ning devoted only to this. And Wil Wheaton's claim to bookselling fame was to sell his book to Star Trek/science fiction fans. And while Internet Marketing is saturated, I know for a fact there are farmers who know that they need to market online, but have no clue where to start looking - a perfect niche and subscription income plan for me: an author, farmer, and internet marketer.

Both Digg and Stumbleupon might be too broad for me to start with. More than likely, I'd start looking for people who also submitted to related areas. I'm not particularly interested in becoming some incredibly-followed guru of Internet Marketing - but I could actually co-network with similar people in order to get more visibility for this little niche of just teaching farmers how to move their existing enterprise over to the Internet. It would only depend on my sales funnel how profitable I could make it - as long as I contributed to this network I was part of.

The interesting part is that I might then "back up into" Digg as those in my little niche network would also have their own networks in Digg or SU. Watching Twitter followers expand for no known reason except good content is an example of that.

Franco, Fernando, Kefin, Dolf - I really appreciate you taking the time to read the article. And if you have any ideas for articles on other aspects of content syndication that would benefit you, let me know. - Richard
