I employed three different techniques (use of long tail keywords in title & post body plus LSI) in an article posted to my blog today (4/2) around the keyword phrase "enhancing article content".

The post is now #1 on Page One (it has been since this afternoon) with > 10 million other pages using those words as well. There are only a couple of sponsored links, so I guess not that competitive but it's all a learning process.
